Sponge Gold Cluster
Manhattan Mine, Manhattan Mining District, Toquima Range, Nye County, Nevada, USA
This remarkable gold specimen showcases a complex, overlapping, sponge-like texture of native gold with microcrystals growing on top. These microcrystals make the gold sparkle and add significant luster to its appearance. Such a specimen is extremely rare, especially since the Manhattan Mine is no longer operational. The gold crystal clusters, visible from all sides, exhibit a slight dendritic crystallization with a small amount of quartz matrix. The specimen is dense and displays a buttery yellow color, distinct from the pale yellow typical of crystals from this locality. This gold specimen is an outstanding example from this area.
