Gold on Quartz
Sonora, Mexico
This extraordinary gold specimen, unearthed in the arid Sonora Desert, is an exceptionally rare native mineral, often unattainable for collectors. Originating from the same deposit mined by the ancient Aztecs and Spanish Conquistadors for currency, jewelry, and other valuables, this specimen was discovered by a local prospector in a rich quartz and gold vein. The crystallized gold features a vibrant, leaflike surface with robust crystals and a complex structure and very high purity in gold. The native gold is heavy and thick and goes through the quartz matrix. Encased in white quartz, the gold is beautifully showcased within on all sides with intricate striations and slightly water worn surfaces. Its bright yellow color makes it an exemplary specimen from this locality.
