Gold on Quartz

Mockingbird Mine

Mariposa County, California

Gold specimens can be very fascinating and this example is no exception with great characteristics and crystal morphology. What makes this specimen unique is its elongated robust single crystal protruding from its white quartz matrix. The crystal exhibits a variety of crystal habits including curvatures, branching short crystals, striations, and multi growth microcrystals. The luster on the gold surface is also very vibrant and adds to its aesthetics. The native gold crystal is very sculptural in shape and it extends through the quartz and out on its very bottom side of the quartz matrix. Gold from this locality are very rare and not often available to mineral collectors as the mine is currently closed. Its color is a very saturated worming yellow which captivated the collector. This native gold specimen is a great representation from its locality.
